The Cumberland Day Program has the capacity to serve 15 to 20 male and female participants between 14 and 18 years of age. Juveniles at this program come from Cumberland County and the northern tip of Salem County. The program is a sentencing alternative for those juvenile offenders who do not require residential or secure placement. A juvenile is placed in this program as a result of the Commission's classification process or by the court assigning a juvenile to a day treatment program a requirement of probation.
The Cumberland Day program has four major components: socialization, education, pre-vocational training and aftercare. The program is designed to meet the most basic emotional, social and academic needs of the participants with emphasis on socialization skills.
Students are picked up from their homes and arrive at the program by 8:00 a.m. They leave the program by 5:00 p.m.
Vocational opportunities are provided through a contractual agreement with Cumberland Community College and include instruction in horticulture.
All participants take part in community service projects. The Cumberland Day Program works with the City of Bridgeton to identify local projects. Juveniles have recently helped create a trail system in a local park and have planted flowers at a local senior center. Youth have also helped remodel several buildings and provide ongoing services to local churches and non-profit organizations.
